A glance at the day's list of participating states shows that the usual tools of parades, speeches, and special presentations, now come largely in the form of tributes to the various historical and literary greats who have made our country the state it is today.
While no one can deny the importance of the contributions of these men to our nation's past and present, we can also be grateful for their role in helping to build and maintain a stronger and more just society. May they rest in peace, and may we celebrate their great achievements in their many fields of endeavor, without rancor and derision.
